Our oral health not only affects our overall health, but also our quality of life and how we connect with others. Our smile has the power to impact our self-perception, confidence and how we feel about ourselves. A recent Delta Dental survey of Americans ages 50 and older, found that 80% of seniors believe that the simple act of smiling can make them feel happier. When we smile, we release endorphins that can help relieve pain, reduce stress and improve our mood which has a direct impact on our overall psychosocial feelings of wellbeing and happiness.

Following a balanced diet throughout the year is important for maintaining overall health, but a nutritious diet can be especially important during winter months. Your body may experience a reduction in vitamin D due to less exposure to sunlight during the winter. There may also be a need to boost vitamin A and vitamin C during these colder months.

Today marks a historic moment for the autism community and advocacy by Autism Speaks as Congress passed the Autism Collaboration, Accountability, Research, Education, and Support (CARES) Act of 2024, sending it to the President’s desk for signature. As the only federal law solely dedicated to the autism community, the Autism CARES Act has been the most important driver of investments in autism research, data and training programs, which have fueled the development of evidence-based, best practices benefiting autistic individuals and their families.

On January 7, 2025, Autism Speaks presented California Assemblymember and Human Services Budget Subcommittee Chair Dr. Corey Jackson with its 2024 Public Service Award. This recognition celebrates Assemblymember Jackson’s unwavering leadership in securing vital funding for services supporting people with autism and other intellectual or developmental disabilities (I/DD).

The holidays are around the corner! For many, this is a time for twinkling lights, unwrapping presents and cozy nights with family. But for people with autism and their families, the holiday season can be stressful. Changes in routine, unusual guests, unfamiliar foods and new sensory experiences can be overwhelming for those on the spectrum.

Last month, I had the privilege of traveling to the country of Georgia as part of the Professional Fellows Program. This unique fellowship fosters cross-cultural exchange, providing an opportunity to share knowledge and learn from the dedicated professionals and families supporting autistic people in Georgia.
